G.M. was great at Albertine..He explained his critical methodology-the assumptions about the nature of criticism that inform his work.
At Albertine G.M. took a scythe to the snobbery of the concept of “guilty pleasures”…
G.M. demonstrated, for those who tend to forget ,as I sometimes do , how music is so much more than its formal properties.
Great updates, Dave — thanks.
“It’s tough having heroes. It’s the hardest thing in the world. It’s harder than being a hero.” I know Mr. Marcus knows that line well. Well, for almost 30 years, he (and Christgau) have been my heroes of criticism. Armed with my copies of my favorite Marcus books and a couple of questions, I walked to Albertine with that quote nagging at me. But I left the bookstore that night feeling justified in having heroes; Mr. Marcus was an engaging speaker and a really nice guy. I will treasure the memory of this evening for a long time to come.
And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Mr. Polito’s contribution to the evening. He led a great conversation with Mr. Marcus and I enjoyed speaking with him after the evening ended. I didn’t know him before I went in but I will definitely explore his work now.
