The French never had a real rock’n’roll culture (perhaps Jacques Dutronc came closest), therefore their popsongs, when sung in French, are very intelligible at the right speed, due to the chanson tradition. And now it’s too late to be unintelligible: there is a thriving hip hop scene in France now, and as everyone everywhere knows, rappers – even if/because the lingo is difficult and the singing speed often high – want to be understood.
