It took 10 minutes of listeing for me to order the Peter Stampfel set. It will make a mind-bending soundtrack for our first post-Covid road trip. Thank you.
Re: the Pete Stampfel review — To my mind, the real “hey, now, hey, now” song is “Finger Poppin’ Time.” Preferably by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, but Lou Ann Barton will do in a pinch.
Regarding ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ – the marketing guy at Capitol told me he regretted not putting “The Hey Now Song” in brackets after the title on the single. That’s what people were asking for in record stores. It might have made the difference between being #2 and #1. The song that overtook it the following week was Cutting Crew’s bombastic ‘(I Just) Died in Your Arms’. (Maybe the brackets made the difference …) Thirty-four years on the hey-now song lives on, not just with Peter Stampfel’s raw interpretation, but a recent, moving New Orleans version from Deacon John.
